When we experience gum issues like gingivitis, or its advanced form, periodontitis, seeking help is imperative. With soft tissue care in Mission Valley, we use the best means possible to help manage and even reverse gum disease.
WHAT IS GUM DISEASE?
There are two primary types of gum disease, or periodontal disease. The first is gingivitis.
Gingivitis is an inflammation of the gum, also known as gingiva. Gingivitis is a reversable condition. However, if left untreated, it can lead to a more serious condition called periodontitis. Periodontitis is a gum infection that can seriously damage the soft tissue and the supporting bone structure of your teeth. While there is no cure to periodontitis, it can be managed and prevented if caught early.

SCALING & ROOT PLANING
Scaling is a technique in which all of the plaque, tartar, and buildup is removed from the tooth and below the gumline.
Once your teeth are cleaned, the next step is root planing. Root planing is the smoothing out of the roots of your teeth. This is done to help encourage your gums to reattach to your teeth. For scaling and planing, a local anesthetic may be used to relieve any pain. As always, our dental team is here for you to make your treatment as smooth and worry-free as possible.
