Types of Preventive Care

With preventive care, we can help ensure you never need those costly or extreme procedures. In fact, maintaining good oral hygiene can improve your overall level of health.

  • Dental Checkups: Continuing care visits with your dentist are vital to ensuring that decay, gum disease or tooth damage is caught early and handled swiftly. When one does not get regular checkups, these issues can grow into bigger problems, causing excessive damage. We recommend checkups annually, depending on the individual case.
  • Dental Cleanings: At the time of your checkup, we will also perform a regular teeth cleaning. This consists of scraping away unwanted plaque buildup, polishing, flossing and also ensuring your teeth are pristine. Many patients wonder why they need to get professional cleanings if they are brushing their teeth regularly. While brushing twice daily is imperative to maintaining good oral health, at-home cleaning does not cover all the needs of your smile. Plaque can still build up and, if left unattended, can turn into tartar, a hard, crusty substance that forms on your teeth. This can lead to bad breath and destroyed enamel, which can cause sensitivity, decay (cavities) and potential tooth loss.
  • Fluoride Treatment: Fluoride is another type of treatment we recommend to prevent future dental issues. As a naturally occurring mineral found on earth, it works to strengthen and fight against cavities by helping the body utilize calcium and other essential minerals to repair weakened tooth enamel. It also joins into the tooth structure of developing teeth, helping to strengthen against bacteria and cavities for life, which can help slow or even reverse cavity development.

Fluoride treatment is simple. It comes in a rinse, gel, foam or varnish and can be applied with a brush, swab or tray. This is held on your teeth for a few minutes, and then you are free to go about your day as normal. It is especially great for kids, as it helps build strong teeth, setting them up for a lifetime of healthy teeth. It can also be used for adults who are prone to cavities to help strengthen them against decay.

Why Is Preventive Care So Important?

Preventive care is arguably the most important part of dentistry. Not only does it help preserve your teeth for the long haul but it saves you from having to do costly procedures down the road.

For example, when cavities are caught early, they are easy to repair. When left untreated, they can reach deep into the root, causing you to need expensive procedures like root canals. Another prime example is gum disease. When caught early, it can be reversed with simple measures. If left untreated, it can turn into periodontitis, which can cause tooth loss and is far more invasive (and expensive) to treat. In some cases, it may even require surgery. Nothing gives our team more joy than seeing our patients happy, healthy and living well with proper preventive care.
